Flash floods turn deadly in Manipur as search ends for missing man

Imphal: A 33-year-old resident of New Lamka Vengnuam South died after flash floods hit Manipur’s Churachandpur district. Heavy rains triggered the disaster. Thangjohnson, son of the late Paukhanmung, was swept away by the Lanva River on Thursday evening.

The man was trying to grab construction materials lost to the rising current during embankment work. Search teams scoured the water for two days. They finally recovered his body on Saturday, August 1.

Deputy Commissioner Krishna Kumar surveyed the destruction. He visited Sielmat, Lower Chapel Lane, Hiangtam Lamka, Chiengkonpang, and Beulalane. He handed out aid to displaced families. Local officials met with philanthropic groups near the Tuitha River to support the recovery mission. The administration provided water and snacks to these volunteers. The Deputy Commissioner praised the search crews, stating, "The District Administration appreciated the efforts of the organisations involved in the search operation."

Officials are still calculating the total damage. They need these numbers to plan long-term relief. Kumar was joined by Additional Deputy Commissioner Seiminthang Lenthang and various sub-divisional officers during his rounds. Families await further help as the cleanup begins.
