Imphal: Flash floods hit Churachandpur on the afternoon of July 30. A heavy downpour started around 4 pm and hammered the town for over an hour. Water levels surged. Local streams and rivulets overflowed, turning roads into channels and bringing daily business to a halt.
Thousands of residents remain affected. The floodwaters reached knee-deep levels in some spots, specifically hitting the Tuibong area hard. Major thoroughfares stayed underwater for hours, stalling traffic and trapping commuters.
Floodwaters poured into houses, ruining food stocks and household belongings. Dozens of parked vehicles sat partially submerged as families scrambled to salvage what they could. Several households near water channels had to evacuate immediately. The worst-hit localities included Lower Mission Veng, Zeliang, D. Phailian, Compound Veng, Lailam Veng, and New Lamka.
Authorities confirmed zero deaths or injuries. Officials and emergency personnel are now running damage assessments across the district. Many locals pointed fingers at the town's failing infrastructure, noting the drainage system cannot handle even short bursts of rain. One resident explained the frustration: "Even a few hours of heavy rainfall now overwhelm streams and drainage channels."
Residents continue to clear mud and water from their homes. Cleanup efforts are underway as the town tries to return to normal.
