Kohima: Flash floods hit Laii village hard. Heavy rains pushed the Ngaorei River past the danger mark, swamping between 80,000 and 90,000 tins of new crops. The Laii Village Authority Council confirmed the destruction on Wednesday. It leaves the local farming community facing a total loss for this year.
The Ngaorei River runs from Ukhrul, cuts along the border, crosses Phek in Nagaland, and feeds the Chindwin in Myanmar. Its current is brutal. The surge wrecked the foundation of the bridge linking Senapati district’s Laii village to Kharasom village in Ukhrul. That link is dead. Residents now struggle to move across the region.
The council demanded action. They want the Manipur government to inspect the damage and pay the farmers for their lost harvest. Beyond the immediate disaster, they highlighted a 50-km gap between Chingjaroi, Lower Phaibung, and Laii village. Farmers currently risk their lives crossing the water for weddings and festivals. The council stated, "The Laii Village Authority Council urged the Manipur government to immediately inspect and assess the crop damage and provide compensation to affected farmers." They are pushing for an urgent repair of the Laini River bridge and the construction of a new hanging bridge to restore safe passage.
