Officials Ban Heavy Vehicles from Kohima Roads After Landslides

Kohima: Kohima District Magistrate B Henok Buchem has banned all heavy vehicles bound for Manipur from entering the district. The order, effective August 14, follows reports of dangerous road conditions. Severe landslides and active sinking zones have made vital routes impassable. The DDMA enacted the restrictions under the Disaster Management Act of 2005 to prevent loss of life.

A joint inspection team identified critical damage stretching from the New Capital Complex Area to the Kidima-Pudunamei Junction. The Kohima Bypass at Chainage KM 30 is now unserviceable. Restoration work there will take at least 15 days. Additionally, the NH-29 stretch from DBS to BSF Camp is failing. A massive landslide hit the Phesama Sinking Zone on August 11, cutting off the Kohima-Mao section of NH-02. The site is now unstable, leaving it "unfit for vehicular traffic as well as pedestrian movement."

Trucks must now divert through Peren district. Light motor vehicles may still use the Phesama-Kisama-Kigwema route near Rhododendron Resort, weather permitting. Officials warned pedestrians to stay away from all affected zones. Contractors have been ordered to deploy crews and machinery to three specific damage sites immediately. Any violations will face legal consequences until further notice.
