Kohima Distributes Assistive Gear to 671 Residents as Officials Push for Better Service Delivery

Kohima: The District Administration and Social Welfare Office in Kohima handed out assistive gear to 671 seniors and people with disabilities on August 17. The distribution took place at the DPDB conference hall. It served 27 people under the ADIP scheme and 644 under the Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana. The equipment reached a total value of Rs 62.24 lakh.

The package included 390 wheelchairs, 500 walking sticks, 541 LS belts, 646 knee braces, 457 commode chairs, 120 walkers, 100 hearing aids, 265 silicon foam cushions, 13 spinal supports, and 76 cervical collars. Beneficiaries also received crutches, rollators, TLM kits, and one cellphone for a leprosy patient.

Advisor for School Education Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome oversaw the event. He pushed for local communities to identify those in need and bridge gaps in care. "Many persons with disabilities, particularly children, remain confined to their homes due to mobility challenges," Yhome said. He warned officials that procedural mistakes could cost the state access to vital central funds.

Staff assessed all beneficiaries between July 1 and July 6, 2026. Distribution teams are currently working out of Chiephobozou, Jakhama, and the District Social Welfare Office in Kohima.

Separately, at a DPDB meeting, Yhome demanded stronger inter-departmental action on urban issues. He tasked the Public Health Engineering Department with reporting on water treatment. He also ordered Urban and Municipal Affairs to prepare for Supreme Court waste management mandates. He expects departments to finalize sector reports on solid and liquid waste for the next monthly meeting.
