Imphal: Rescue teams found the body of 33-year-old Thangjohnson on Saturday, August 1, ending a two-day search in Manipur’s Churachandpur district. He is the first flood fatality reported in the state this monsoon. The man, a resident of New Lamka Vengnuam South and son of the late Paukhanmung, disappeared on Thursday evening.
Heavy rains triggered flash floods across the region. Thangjohnson was working near an embankment along the Lanva River, a tributary of the Khuga River system. He tried to grab construction materials pulled away by the current. The swollen water overwhelmed him. He vanished.
Search operations began Friday morning with help from family members and volunteers. They recovered his remains near Lanva village on Saturday. Local officials confirmed the discovery. "The recovery confirms the first fatality linked to the current spell of monsoon flooding in Manipur," officials stated.
Deputy Commissioner Krishna Kumar toured the damage. He visited Sielmat, Lower Chapel Lane, Hiangtam Lamka, Chiengkonpang, Beulalane, and Tuibong. Kumar met with families to distribute relief supplies. District authorities are now counting the total damage to plan further aid and rehabilitation.
