Imphal: Former Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh wants more women in the statehouse. He spoke Saturday at a conference in Kamjong district focused on female political empowerment. Women here lead social and economic movements, yet they rarely hold seats in the 60-member Manipur Legislative Assembly. Ibobi Singh noted this disconnect during the event at Kasom Khullen.

The MPCC president says sustainable development depends on equal access to local governance and Parliament. He backed the Congress party stance on a 30 percent reservation for women in administrative roles. "Sustainable development required women to have equal opportunities to participate in local governance, state legislatures and Parliament," he said.

Organizers included the Phungyar Block and the Manipur Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee, led by working president Victor Keishing. Ibobi Singh urged voters to grill current representatives on local progress before upcoming elections. He also asked for support for Keishing.

The event drew top brass, including All India Mahila Congress president Alka Lamba. MLAs K. Ranjit and Okram Kenedy joined other party figures like national secretaries Aditha and Barnali. Leaders K. Ratankumar, L. Tilotama, M. Sharma, and Joyson Khoho also attended alongside John Panmei, P. Bankim Chandra Meitei, Amir Hussain, R. Thiampuina, Cosmic Jajo, and Allahudin.
