Nambol River Breach Floods 100 Manipur Homes

Imphal: A 10-foot breach in the Nambol River embankment triggered flash floods in Manipur's Bishnupur district on Monday. The wall gave way at Kongkham Mamang Leikai near Salampham Mapa around 2 pm. Two days of relentless rain caused the collapse. Floodwaters swept through 100 homes and local fish ponds, washing away stock and ruining agricultural land.

Emergency crews remain on the ground. The Bishnupur district administration, the Nambol Sub-Divisional Officer, Nambol Police, and members of the Indian Red Cross Society are racing to plug the gap. Local residents joined the effort, blocking canal sections and reinforcing vulnerable spots. Despite these combined efforts, officials confirmed the breach remained open when reporting concluded. Authorities continue to monitor the rising water levels.

The State Water Resources Department reports that both the Nambol and Nambul rivers are now above warning levels. Tiddim Road in Imphal suffers from severe waterlogging, while rain-triggered landslides have blocked travel in the Tamenglong and Noney districts. The India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for the region. Forecasters expect intense monsoon weather to persist until July 26. As one official noted, "The flood situation is expected to remain serious over the next few days."
