Imphal: Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam opened the first Vegetable Festival 2026 today at the Khoijuman Khullen Playground in Bishnupur district. The event highlights the area's massive role in Manipur's food supply. Khoijuman currently produces 19.75 percent of the state's total vegetable output. The Minister plans to push this figure to 25 percent by next year.
The Khoijuman Apunba Chaokhat Thourang Lup organized the festival. It features 54 stalls, including five reserved for internally displaced persons. Oinam MLA Irengbam Nalini Devi presided over the event, while Moirang MLA Thongam Shanti Singh joined as a guest of honor. Other officials in attendance included Deputy Commissioner Pooja Elangbam, Commissioner-cum-Secretary Thaithuilung Pamei, and Project Director Heisnam Balkrishna Singh.
Konthoujam brought in three agricultural scientists from Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Baramati, Pune, on October 24. They held a week of training for farmers from Kawasiphai, Khoijuman, Nachou, Toubul, and Potshangbam. The Minister stressed the need for a solid State Agriculture Policy to help the local economy. He pointed to new infrastructure as a key step forward.
Kawasiphai now hosts new cold storage facilities. These include specific chambers for both vegetables and fish with a capacity of 5 metric tonnes. Konthoujam pushed for sustainable and organic methods to ensure farmers thrive. He told reporters, "The vegetable festival is an important initiative to showcase locally produced vegetables and provide farmers with a direct marketing platform to connect with consumers."
