Imphal: Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam ordered the arrest of 17 people detained at a designated camp in Kangpokpi district. This follows the murder of three Meitei men in the Sunurok hills this past Monday. Police and military units conducted a raid on the Sinai camp, locating 18 individuals total. While one person is confirmed as a Kuki National Front cadre, authorities are still identifying the others.
Security forces previously arrested three other suspects in the case. One is allegedly linked to the Kuki National Front (N). Officials currently have these suspects under interrogation. The Minister stressed that operations will target camps belonging to Meitei, Naga, and Kuki outfits without bias.
The state confirms the Suspension of Operations pact expired on September 4 and remains inactive. Konthoujam stated, "There is no SoO agreement in the state now." He warned that any fresh recruitment by these groups is strictly illegal. The government is moving to track cadres missing from the 14 total designated camps.
Ethnic conflict in the region has been violent. Since May 2023, at least 306 people have died. Another 49 remain missing while thousands have lost their homes. Operations in the hill districts remain difficult due to communication tech and rough terrain. Despite these obstacles, Konthoujam remains firm. "The operation will continue in connection with the recent killing of the three youths. The government will not turn back from its operation. We cannot disclose much at this stage," he said.
