Road project fuels ethnic tension in Manipur

Imphal: Tensions between Naga and Kuki communities are boiling over in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district. The fight centers on the Koutruk-Konsakhul road project. Regional violence has already killed 70 people since February. Both groups are now digging in their heels.

The Joint Tribe Students Association, representing the Inpui, Liangmai, Rongmei, and Zeme tribes, wants the state to fast-track construction. They argue the road is vital for Konsakhul village connectivity. The traditional route through Lailon Vaiphei and Leimakhong turned dangerous following an abduction on May 13 that left six Naga people hurt. The association claims the new path avoids Kuki settlements entirely. They want security for workers and machines to prevent further delays.

The Kuki Inpi South West Sadar Hills organization refuses to back down. They demanded an immediate halt to all work. The group claims the road violates their customary land rights. They warned that moving forward could spark more ethnic violence. In an official statement, the group said, "infrastructure projects should not proceed without addressing local territorial concerns."

Residents struggle to reach healthcare, education, and trade hubs in the capital. The JTSA is now pushing the district administration to clear obstructions and host peace talks. They insist the project is purely about access, not provocation.
