Imphal: Armed militants ambushed a vehicle on the Imphal-Tamenglong Road in Kangpokpi district at 8:30 am Thursday. The attack killed five men instantly. A sixth victim, identified as village chairman Wisobou Charenamai, was initially reported missing before being found dead. These killings bring the confirmed death toll to six.
The victims include Tadsongbou Ringkangmai, founder of Right Path School, and school student leader Japou MK. Also killed were Makui Youth Club members Mariakdibou Wijunamai and Anil Wijunamai. Gaikamang Ringkangmai sustained injuries during the ambush. The violence occurred on a stretch between Makui Ashang and Thanamba Naga.
The Naga People’s Organisation called for the immediate closure of shops in Senapati district to protest the violence. This tragedy followed a high-level peace meeting involving Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho and the United Naga Council just one day prior. Security forces are now sweeping the area.
Violence spread further along the IT Road corridor Thursday morning. Gunfire erupted near Naibet at 9:20 am as armed men targeted Kuki farmers guarding their paddy crops near Wakotphai village. Local Kuki-Zo volunteers returned fire, forcing farmers to abandon their temporary field huts. Local sources blamed NSCN-IM cadres for the assault. One local source stated, "The incident occurred a day after a high-level meeting in Senapati involving Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho."
The IT Road remains a dangerous artery for remote villages. It is a flashpoint for ongoing clashes between Naga and Kuki factions. Authorities have yet to release an official account of either attack.

Naga civil society organizations, including the United Naga Council (UNC) and the Chandel Naga People’s Organisation, have officially named factions they believe are responsible for the carnage. They allege that cadres from the Kuki National Front (KNF), KNF (P), and Kuki Revolutionary Army (KRA), operating under the command of KNF/UPF Home Secretary Jangboi Kipgen, carried out the ambush. As a mark of mourning and defiance, the UNC declared a Genna on August 28. The mandate shuttered all business establishments, government offices, and private institutions across Naga-inhabited areas from 6 am to 6 pm, though it granted exemptions for emergency services and board examinations. The Makui Village Authority noted that the NPO had previously released 14 villagers from Taphou Kuki in June as a goodwill gesture, only to have that gesture met with this lethal escalation.
Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho condemned the killings, labeling the targeting of non-combatants as a barbaric act that threatens to derail efforts to restore stability. He promised state support for the families of the deceased and the injured. Meanwhile, the incident has drawn comparisons to the events of May 13, 2026, when six Liangmai Naga civilians were abducted and later killed, as well as an August 14 strike at Langka village that claimed two more lives.
On the other side of the conflict, the M. Wakotphai Village Authority and Kuki-Zo volunteers have pushed back against the blame. They allege that fighters from the NSCN-IM and ZUF (K) triggered the second round of gunfire at Naibet by attacking Kuki farmers sheltering in field huts. These groups are now demanding a formal government review of the ceasefire agreement with the NSCN-IM, arguing that the protection afforded by the pact is being abused to mask offensive operations.

Survivor Gaikamang Ringkangmai, 44, revealed chilling details about the ambush while receiving treatment for a gunshot wound to his left forearm. He claimed the attackers were positioned in pairs, wore full camouflage uniforms, and tied red ribbons to their rifles. Ringkangmai, who hid in nearby foliage during the attack, noted that some of the assailants had long hair.
State authorities completed the recovery of the victims' remains on Friday morning after initial efforts were blocked by residents in T Waichong. Meanwhile, the United Naga Council continues to pressure the state for a Special Investigation Team to hold the KNF(P) and KRA accountable for the massacre.

The Manipur unit of the National People's Party has formally branded the August 27 ambush on the Imphal-Tamei Road as an unpardonable act of terror.
