Imphal: The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) has ordered a 48-hour total shutdown across Manipur's Kangpokpi district. The strike begins at 5 pm on October 29 and runs until 5 pm on October 31. This move follows the alleged abduction of two Kuki youths on October 28. The missing men are 21-year-old Thangginlun Chongloi, son of Paominlal Chongloi, and 20-year-old Paoginlal Hangsing, son of Haolet Hangsing. Both are from Taphou Kuki village.
CoTU claims Naga militants intercepted the pair between Hengbung and Taphou Kuki village. The organization demands their safe, immediate, and unconditional release. Shops, markets, schools, government offices, and private vehicles must stop operations during this period. Medical services, media personnel, and security forces are exempt from these restrictions.
The group hit out at the state government and security forces, alleging a discriminatory approach to public safety. CoTU argues that incidents involving non-Kuki-Zo groups trigger swift rescues, while cases involving Kuki-Zo people face systemic delays. The committee warned that it "would intensify its agitation if the two youths were not released safely and unharmed."
CoTU holds both the government and the perpetrators accountable for any fallout from this situation. Officials have not independently verified these kidnapping allegations. Tensions remain high as the district braces for the two-day stoppage.
