Manipur Village Chief Denounces Arson Attempt and Civilian Deaths

Imphal: Kailenjang village chief Lhingjahoi Hangshing slammed an attempted arson attack on her abandoned Kangpokpi settlement. She fled the area due to regional hostilities. She left the village under the care of neighbors.

Two civilians from the non-Kuki-Zo community died during the incident. Hangshing mourned their loss. "I strongly condemn the death of those two civilians from the non-Kuki-Zo community with whom I had negotiated to take care of my village during my absence," she said.

The Committee on Tribal Unity in Sadar Hills Kangpokpi blamed armed cadres from the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah and Zeliangrong United Front-Kamson for the violence. The group claimed these fighters hid out at Taphou Naga. These claims remain unverified.

Tensions rise. Reports from Tamenglong and Noney districts also note recent civilian fatalities linked to these same armed groups. The Committee on Tribal Unity urged the public to avoid pinning communal labels on the fighting until authorities confirm the facts.
