Flash Floods Submerge Churachandpur After Heavy Rainfall

Imphal: A sudden, intense downpour slammed Churachandpur on Thursday. The deluge started at 4 pm and lasted over an hour. It triggered flash floods and severe waterlogging. Thousands of residents remain affected. The rain caused local streams and rivulets to overflow, pushing water into streets and houses. No fatalities or injuries have been reported.

Lower Mission Veng, Zeliang, D. Phailian, Compound Veng, Lailam Veng, and New Lamka bore the brunt of the storm. Tuibong also faced severe flooding. Knee-deep water filled homes and submerged parked vehicles. Roads turned into rivers. Traffic and local businesses came to a dead stop. Families living near water channels evacuated their homes as property losses mounted.

Residents pointed to poor infrastructure. They claim the town cannot handle heavy rain. Local residents attributed the recurring flooding to inadequate drainage infrastructure, alleging that even a few hours of heavy rainfall now overwhelm streams and drainage channels. District authorities and emergency crews are currently on the ground to assess the destruction. Residents continue to salvage food stocks and belongings from the silt-filled debris.
