Imphal: Security forces arrested two insurgent leaders in Manipur this week. The operations resulted in the seizure of heavy weaponry and explosives. Officials confirmed the arrests on Thursday, August 6.

In the first sweep on August 5, joint teams from the 5 Assam Rifles and state police apprehended RC Singson. Singson serves as the self-styled army chief of the United National Kuki Army-Hmar, also referred to as the UKNA Hmar. He is a resident of Old Gelmol village near the Churachandpur Police Station.

Singson led personnel to a forested site near Thingchawm Village after his interrogation. The search yielded an AK-47 rifle with a magazine, a 9 mm pistol with a magazine, three improvised explosive devices, two Baofeng radio sets, and a smartphone.

Police registered a case at the Churachandpur Police Station under FIR No. 79(08)2026. The charges invoke provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Arms Act, the Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act, and the Explosive Substances Act. The UNKA operates outside the Suspension of Operations framework, a peace agreement the Ministry of Home Affairs holds with other Kuki militant groups along the border.

A separate operation on August 6 targeted a different group. Forces arrested Usham Rojit Kumar, a 20-year-old active cadre of the Revolutionary People's Front/People's Liberation Army. Officers picked him up at his home in Korshantabi Maning Leikai under the Sugnu Police Station in the Kakching district.

Authorities are currently hunting for more leads. A police spokesperson stated, "Further investigation is underway to ascertain the origin of the recovered weapons and explosives, and to identify other individuals linked to the militant network."
