Imphal: Security forces arrested six people and seized a massive cache of weapons and stolen vehicles during a wave of operations across Manipur over the last 24 hours. Officers in Imphal East targeted banned militant groups. They arrested 52-year-old Md. Majahar Ali in the Checkon area. Police named him an extortionist for the Socialist Revolutionary Party. He had a stolen Honda Activa scooter with him.

In a separate strike at Seijang Awang Leikai, police grabbed 25-year-old Pheiroijam Karanjoy Singh. He belongs to the Revolutionary People’s Front. A search of his home uncovered a hand grenade, a detonator, an empty rifle magazine, and three spent cartridge cases. Police also tracked down a second stolen Honda Activa in Lilong after interrogating 27-year-old Nawaz Khan. Khan had already been arrested on August 3.

Tensions are boiling over in Jiribam district. Security forces recently arrested three men linked to the Manipur People’s Army. Civil society groups claim these men were tricked into attending peace talks before their arrest. Nongthombam Kumari, secretary of the Jiribam Ima Meira Paibi Lup, stated, “If the detainees are not released by midnight, the organisations would impose a total and indefinite shutdown across Jiribam district.”

Explosives remain a major threat. On Friday, villagers near Sikibung in Ukhrul found an IED while hunting for beehives. A bomb squad from the Border Security Force neutralized the device at 4 p.m. Meanwhile, on Saturday, August 8, security teams combed the Khema Reserved Forest in Imphal East. They found four 9mm pistols, two single-barrel guns, 14 grenades, and a 4.6 kg suspected IED. The haul also included 162 live rounds, combat gear, and communications equipment.
