Imphal: Security forces and Manipur Police swept through the state on August 1, arresting four militants and one alleged arms dealer in a series of coordinated strikes. Officers recovered a stash of weaponry and explosives during the operations.
In Imphal West, forces arrested 24-year-old Wahengbam Mayday Singh, a cadre for the RPF/PLA, at his Awangkhunou Lamkhai home. Bishnupur district police picked up another RPF/PLA member, 41-year-old Ngangbam Nanao Singh, from his residence in Wangoo Ahallup Sanasam Leikai. Both men remain in custody.
Along National Highway-37 in Tamenglong district, authorities caught 32-year-old Lungthaukhon Panmei, an active NSCN-K cadre. Officials caught him allegedly conducting extortion near Kaimai. They seized a Baofeng radio, 13 receipt memos for the Government of Republic of Nagaland, seven official tokens, and Rs 2,800 in cash. While NSCN-K has splintered since the 2017 death of S.S. Khaplang, police did not specify which faction Panmei represented.
In Imphal East, police arrested 56-year-old Laishram Lakpati Singh. They found a No. 36 hand grenade and 10 rounds of 9mm ammunition on him. Authorities identified him as a middleman for the illegal arms trade. "Further investigation into the arrests and recoveries is underway."
Near the border, security teams scoured a forest area between Pillars 72 and 73 in the Tengnoupal district. They pulled a 9mm pistol, a double-barrel gun, two hand grenades, and six radio sets from the woods. They also found six IEDs. Bomb squads destroyed the explosives on-site.
