Guwahati: A police sub-inspector allegedly drove drunk through Assam’s Chirang district, smashing into two e-rickshaws and a motorcycle. Five people suffered serious injuries, including a woman and a child. The chaos stretched over five kilometres near Tulsijhora under the Amguri Police Station in Basugaon.
Witnesses identified the driver as Sub-Inspector Ritumoni Bora. He was off-duty and wearing civilian clothes. His vehicle, plate number AS19 W 7765, slammed into victims at multiple locations. Angry locals chased the car and caught the officer. A mob then assaulted Bora.
The officer-in-charge of Amguri Police Station, Rahim Bori, arrived to rescue his colleague from the crowd. Residents claimed Bori acted inappropriately during the extraction. Tensions boiled over in the street. Senior officials soon stepped in to manage the fallout.
Chirang Senior Superintendent of Police Dhruba Bora arrived to calm the area. He promised the public a full investigation. "Appropriate action would be taken against the sub-inspector if he was found responsible for the accidents and alleged drunk driving," the SSP stated.
The five victims are now recovering at a private hospital in Bongaigaon. Dhruba Bora visited the medical facility to check on their condition. The department is still determining what disciplinary or legal measures will follow the inquiry.
