Three Children Drown in Assam Pond During Fishing Trip

Guwahati: Three children died Monday after falling into a pond in the Garokata Beel area of Assam’s Goalpara district. The victims, identified as Jatingkar Rabha, Diya Rabha, and Nilkrip Rabha, were fishing with their mother when they slipped into deep water. They vanished beneath the surface.

Locals launched an immediate search operation and pulled the bodies from the water. Officers from the Baguan and Rangjuli police stations arrived shortly after to secure the scene. Authorities transported the remains to the Goalpara Shaheed Nidhanu Ram Rajbongshi Civil Hospital for post-mortem examinations.

The tragedy hit the Darirpar area near the Baguan Police Station. Families from Chatabari had traveled from the jurisdiction of the Rangjuli Police Station to fish at the site. Residents now point to illegal excavation work as a major factor in the drownings. They claim workers dug deep pits into the bed of the waterbody during the dry season, creating hidden hazards for anyone wading near the shore.

Police have launched a formal investigation into the circumstances of the incident. Officials are currently reviewing the site and the claims made by grieving witnesses.
