Guwahati: Police shot Nasirul Sheikh in the leg during a botched escape attempt in Assam’s Chirang district. The suspect tried to bolt while officers escorted him to a site for investigation. Police opened fire to stop his getaway. He is now recovering under guard at the JSB Civil Hospital in Kajalgaon.
Sheikh faces charges for the rape of a tribal Class 10 student. Investigators say three men lured the minor, sexually assaulted her, and posted a video of the crime online. Authorities took Sheikh, a resident of Bartalowa village, into a three-day judicial custody stint on Sunday, August 16. Officials maintain a heavy security presence at the hospital while the investigation continues.
