Agartala: Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy marked a turnaround for the Tripura Sundari Subdivisional Hospital this week. The state government officially sanctioned 43 crore for a major infrastructure overhaul. The project aims to modernize the facility that nearly vanished a decade ago. Back in 2012-13, the previous government planned to shutter the hospital following the opening of the District Hospital. Singha Roy recalled his desperate public plea to then Chief Minister Manik Sarkar to save the site for local residents. He noted that Sarkar rejected the request during a government event, stating: "Today I am recalling the past because we should never forget it."

Officials expect the total cost to reach 70 crore for a complete, modern look. This shift represents a broader push to fix the state healthcare system. Singha Roy contrasted this progress with the previous administration, which he claimed built subpar facilities. He pointed to the Gomati District Hospital as a prime example of systemic failure where poor construction quality necessitated a total rebuild. The Chief Minister recently approved over 100 crore for the expansion of the Gomati facility, and the government has already floated tenders for the work.

Tripura has seen a sharp climb in state spending. Infrastructure budgets jumped from 3,000 crore to 8,000 crore over the last eight years. Singha Roy highlighted these figures as a major success for the state. He credited the current administration with prioritizing quality where past leaders neglected basic oversight.
