Imphal: Heziakgale Pame endured a brutal journey to reach a hospital on September 4. Villagers in the Tousem subdivision of Manipur carried her on a bamboo stretcher because local roads were impassable. She is the wife of Heichiliang Pame and hails from Deigie village in the Tamenglong district. They aimed for Lamina Hospital in Pailapool, Assam, after medical transport within their own state proved impossible.
The patient suffered from blood in her stool. Doctors have not yet confirmed the exact nature of her illness. Locals could not reach the District Hospital Tamenglong because the road connecting Tousem to the district headquarters has crumbled. They crossed the Jiri River instead. The route into Assam offered the only reliable way to get her to a doctor.
Residents describe the area as one of the most neglected corners of the Tamenglong district. They struggle with broken infrastructure, limited banking, and failing schools. Villagers now demand immediate road fixes to prevent future tragedies. They want better access to basic services. As one villager stated, "patients should not have to be carried on makeshift stretchers and cross into another state simply to access basic medical care."
