Manipur villagers demand better roads after medical emergency

Imphal: Villagers in Manipur’s Tousem Sub-Division are demanding roads and clinics. A recent health crisis forced neighbors to carry an ailing woman on a bamboo stretcher into Assam. The infrastructure in this remote part of Tamenglong district is failing. Residents cannot reach basic services.

Heziakgale Pame, wife of Heichiliang Pame, fell ill on Friday. The roads to the Tamenglong district headquarters were impassable. Her group carried her across the Jiri River on a makeshift stretcher. They eventually reached Lamina Hospital in Pailapool, Assam, by vehicle. Her specific medical condition remains unknown.

Tousem sits on the borders of Assam and Nagaland. It is one of the most underdeveloped zones in the region. Locals struggle with crumbling roads, empty schools, and no access to banks. Community leaders want action, not talk. They stated: "Residents should not have to cross state borders or depend on traditional methods such as bamboo stretchers to access emergency medical care."

State and district officials face mounting pressure to fix these gaps. The current situation leaves people stranded without medical help or administrative support. The community insists that the government must stop giving assurances and start building the roads.
