Agartala: Manik Lal Datta died Saturday at 78. The veteran educator and cultural figure suffered heart failure while receiving care at ILS Hospital. His death hit the Bordowali community hard.

Datta spent over 30 years teaching at Bordowali Higher Secondary School, starting in 1974 and retiring in 2008. He was born in 1948 to local doctor Manoranjan Datta and attended MBB College before beginning his long career in the classroom. He leaves behind a legacy of service.

Mourners followed his cortege through sites that defined his life. The procession stopped at the Tripura Cricket Association office, where he was a life member, and his ancestral home in Milan Sangha. Stops also included the Mouchak Club, where he served as president, before the final rites took place at the Battala crematorium.

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha visited the family home to honor his memory. He described Datta as "a popular teacher and cultural activist whose contribution to society will outlive him." TPCC president Asish Kumar Saha and MLA Sudip Roy Barman also offered condolences.

Datta did not limit his work to school walls. He funded an Ashram in Melaghar, donated to Jagannath Bari, and gave his own money to help the needy. He was a pillar of the community.
