Imphal: Students, teachers, and guests gathered at the Maniram Dewan Trade Centre Auditorium today for the Freshers Meet-cum-Farewell Function of the Manipuri Students Association in Betkuchi, Guwahati. Thangjam Leishemba, president of the association, presided over the event. Yengkhom Monojit, an assistant professor of political science at Royal Global University, served as chief guest.
Attendees observed a minute of silence and offered floral tributes for late RGU student Devika. The event also included an honor ceremony for RGU teachers. The mood shifted quickly to the harsh realities facing their home state. Nongthombam Thoithoiba, president of the Nationalists Collective Manipur, cited economic stagnation, drug abuse, and a shrinking indigenous population as major threats. He questioned if the current curriculum prepares students for the age of artificial intelligence. He stated, "syllabi have remained largely unchanged for decades, leaving students to learn through an outdated framework."
Guest of honour and DESAM president Oinam Romesh urged students in Guwahati to work harder to protect Manipur's future. He attacked the implementation of the National Education Policy, claiming it fails to hit the mark. Romesh also slammed alleged nepotism and corruption at Manipur University and labeled the performance of Dhanamanjuri University as disappointing.
