Aizawl: BJP MLA K Hrahmo wants a deep look at the Uniform Civil Code for Mizoram. He made his case on September 21 at the party office in Aizawl. He believes the law could shield Mizo women in marriages with non-tribal men. The Palak lawmaker claims some non-tribal men in the state keep multiple wives and marry Mizo women despite existing unions.
Hrahmo says these men often use their Mizo wives for business ventures. When those businesses go bust, he alleges the men vanish. They leave the women and children behind with nothing. The UCC forces monogamy and sets rules for splitting property after a divorce. Hrahmo claims these rules would offer vital protection for women facing such exploitation.
Critics often fight laws from the Centre because of politics or simple ignorance. "Opposition to laws introduced by the Centre often stems from political considerations or a lack of understanding of their provisions," Hrahmo said. He argued that history shows some unpopular laws eventually win acceptance once the benefits become clear.
Hrahmo dismissed fears that the code would target tribal customs. He pointed out that tribal groups usually stay outside the scope of such laws. He accused the Congress party of fear-mongering to score political points. He wants a formal study on whether Mizoram needs these legal safeguards to stop the mistreatment of local women by outsiders.
