Imphal: IIIT Manipur launched Ishaan today. It is an AI-powered translation app designed to break down language barriers across the country. Officials introduced the tool at the IIIT Manipur auditorium in Mantripukhri under the National Language Translation Mission, also known as BHASHINI. The goal remains simple: expand public access to high-tech translation software.
Dr. Kishorjit Nongmeikapam, the project principal investigator, confirmed the app is a group effort. IIIT Manipur built the platform in collaboration with IIIT Bombay, IIIT Hyderabad, Gauhati University, NIT Silchar, and the University of North Bengal. The software provides bidirectional machine translation for several languages. This includes English to Manipuri, Hindi to Manipuri, English to Bodo, English to Nepali, and Assamese to Bodo.
The technology is heavy on data. It packs more than 3 lakh sentence pairs and over 60 advanced neural machine translation resources to ensure accuracy. "The project aims to provide high-quality bidirectional machine translation," said Dr. Nongmeikapam. Android users can download the app right now. Developers are currently working on an iOS version for Apple devices.
