Shillong: Meghalaya is turning its digital ambitions into paychecks. The Shillong Technology Park in Umsawli now houses a full roster of IT firms, banks, and software businesses. These companies have created over 1,400 local jobs. Women fill more than 700 of those roles.
Construction crews are closing in on phase two. This new section covers 1.8 lakh square feet. It promises more room for growing tech outfits. The state government wants to hit a $16-billion economy by 2032. They aim to crack India's top ten list for IT services within a decade.
The push is moving west. Work on the Tura IT Park near Doldegre continues at a steady clip. It hit 78.67 per cent completion by late August 2026. The Union Ministry of Development of the Northeastern Region provided ₹126.94 crore for the project under the PM-DevINE scheme.
Skilling remains the engine for this growth. The Meghalaya State Skill Development Society is pushing training programs for machine learning. Trainers are hitting the floor at Shillong Polytechnic, ITI Rynjah, and ITI Tura. Officials held a NASSCOM industry meet in May 2026 to talk shop. The AI SPARK event drew crowds to the park.
Public services are changing too. The Integrated Command and Control Centre uses AI video analytics for traffic and crime. Engineers deployed IoT sensors across 70,000 water springs to track resources. The state is now setting up an AI Centre of Excellence and new Data labs.
State officials are betting on this transformation. As the infrastructure matures, leaders believe it will drive long-term stability. The state’s official stance on this transition is clear: "The larger question for Meghalaya is no longer simply whether it can build technology infrastructure, but whether that infrastructure can develop into a sustainable industry."
