Nagaland University Researchers Build AI Framework to Protect Indian Heritage

Kohima: A research team led by Nagaland University has released a new framework for using artificial intelligence to save India's vanishing cultural history. Published in the journal Acta Innovations, the study outlines how technology can store manuscripts, oral traditions, and endangered languages. Experts from Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka joined the effort.

The team built a nine-point evaluation system. It covers digitisation accuracy, text recognition, and ethical usage. Machines often struggle with nuance. They may transcribe text perfectly while mangling deep historical meaning. Prof Ravi Ranjan Kumar from Nagaland University noted, "Technical accuracy does not necessarily guarantee cultural accuracy."

AI must involve local communities. It cannot replace human knowledge. The researchers identified five main areas for deployment, including printed documents, photographs, and archaeological sites. The tech can create three-dimensional models of structures or transcribe oral recordings. However, the study warns that users must clearly distinguish original evidence from computer-generated interpretations.

Co-authors include Major Dr N Kavitha, Nisha Sengar, Dr Sonia Gouri, Dr J Lalitha Sridevi, Kumar Sai Deepak B, and Dr P Deepavathi. Nagaland University Vice-Chancellor Prof Jagadish K Patnaik championed the cross-state collaboration. He believes tech must respect community rights. Future work requires piloting this framework across various scripts and dialects to check its value.
