Guwahati: Assam Police cracked down on two separate illegal operations this week. Officers hit a slaughterhouse in Nagaon and caught wildlife traffickers in Tamulpur. The raids netted significant illicit goods and led to several arrests.
In Nagaon, an early morning police raid shuttered an illegal slaughterhouse. Officers seized 285 kg of suspected beef along with 36 cattle and two buffaloes. Police arrested Asab Ali at the scene. Authorities are now searching for two other alleged operators, Noor Ali and Noor Zaman. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed the bust on social media. He stated, "Assam has zero tolerance for illegal cattle smuggling and unlawful slaughter." He warned that those involved would face the full force of the law.
Meanwhile, the Special Task Force hit Tamulpur late Friday night. They caught two men in the Bangalipara area following specific intelligence tips. Police identified the suspects as 29-year-old Gwhwm Basumatary and 23-year-old Swdwbma Badimatary. The pair allegedly tried to sell two elephant tusks for Rs 6 lakh. The tusks weighed 2.09 kg and 1.97 kg.
The STF handed the suspects and the ivory over to the Forest Department. Investigators are now checking if the men belong to a larger inter-state trafficking network. Police work continues in both districts.
