Guwahati: Assam police launched a double strike against illegal trade this weekend. The Special Task Force arrested two men in Tamulpur for ivory trafficking. They also shut down a slaughterhouse in Nagaon.
Officers moved into the Bangalipara area late Friday night. They caught Gwhwm Basumatary, 29, and Swdwbma Badimatary, 23, with two elephant tusks. The tusks weighed 2.09 kg and 1.97 kg. The haul totaled roughly 4 kg. Intelligence reports suggest the duo planned to sell the ivory for 6 lakh rupees. That breaks down to 1.5 lakh per kg. The STF handed the suspects and the evidence to the Forest Department. Investigators are now checking for ties to larger inter-state trafficking rings.
Separately, police raided an illegal slaughterhouse in Nagaon on Friday. They seized 285 kg of beef, 36 cattle, and two buffaloes. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the site was run by Noor Ali and Noor Zaman. Police arrested Asab Ali during the raid. They are still hunting the other two suspects. Sarma made the state's stance clear on social media. "Assam has zero tolerance for illegal cattle smuggling and unlawful slaughter," he posted. The state government promised that anyone involved in these crimes will face the full force of the law.
