Guwahati: A Nagaon court sentenced five people to life in prison for a 2016 murder. The Additional District and Sessions Judge No. 3 delivered the verdict today. Justice finally arrived. The court convicted Amir Ali, Taher Ali, Zamir Ali, Yasin Ali, and Kamala Khatun for the killing documented in Batadrava Police Station Case No. 131/2016.

The group received life terms under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. They must also pay a fine of Rs 10,000 each. The court tacked on seven years of rigorous imprisonment for Section 326 of the IPC, plus another Rs 10,000 fine. If they skip that second payment, they face six more months behind bars.

The violent episode occurred on October 8, 2016. Investigators tied the motive to an illicit relationship involving Yasin Ali. The case dragged on for nearly ten years. Court records note the sentencing comes "nearly a decade after the case was registered at Batadrava Police Station."
