Guwahati: Assam legislators moved to donate one month’s salary for state flood relief efforts. Every party represented in the Assembly joined the pledge, except the Raijor Dal. MLA Mehboob Muktar sat in the House but stayed silent. Assembly Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Dass and Deputy Speaker Habbey Teron confirmed their contributions. Secretariat staff will also donate one day of pay.
The death toll stands at 68. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika categorized the disaster as "unprecedented and unnatural." Data shows 30 deaths in Sivasagar, 20 in Charaideo, nine in Jorhat, two in Golaghat, and seven elsewhere. Recent numbers suggest 4.45 lakh people remain affected, down from over five lakh.
Opposition members from Congress, AIUDF, and the TMC demanded a Rs 10,000 crore central package. AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal previously donated Rs 2 crore. The AIUDF also pledged an additional Rs 2 lakh. Meanwhile, the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad demanded Rs 20 lakh in ex gratia for victims' families and Rs 5 lakh for every affected household.
The BJP launched a separate fundraising drive. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma aims to raise Rs 12 crore to supply clothes to two lakh women and two lakh children in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat. Donations up to Rs 2,000 go to local MLAs. Larger sums head to the party bank account.
Agriculture relief is underway. Minister Hazarika plans to distribute free paddy seeds and seedlings in Jorhat, Sivasagar, and Charaideo within five days. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal pledged continued coordination with state authorities to ensure the delivery of essential supplies.
