Guwahati: Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi demanded Rs 10 lakh in relief for flood-hit families on Wednesday, July 29. He blasted the state’s current Rs 15,000 payout as a pittance. The destruction is total. Gogoi claimed 40,000 families in his constituency alone suffered ruin and asked the Centre for a Rs 400 crore special package. He warned of public protests if the government does not act.
The death toll has climbed to 75. Congress MLA Joy Prakash Das described the crisis as a humanitarian disaster. He confirmed that all Congress legislators will donate their previous month’s salaries to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. Das wants Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah on the ground to witness the damage firsthand.
The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) filed a formal memorandum with the Prime Minister on July 29. They want the government to label the annual flood and erosion cycle a national calamity. The party noted that past prime ministers conducted aerial surveys during similar disasters. They accused the current administration of using technical loopholes to dodge past promises. The AJP memorandum stated: "It is therefore a matter of serious concern that the present dispensation now cites the absence of a special category in the Disaster Management Act, 2005, as a reason to deny a status that the political establishment had earlier promised to secure."
Gogoi also criticized Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for failing to secure a special package during meetings in New Delhi. He claimed the state government has been ignored by the Prime Minister. Public infrastructure across Upper Assam lies in pieces. Roads, embankments, and homes remain submerged. Regional leaders insist that residents in Sivasagar and Nazira have lost two decades of economic progress. They now demand immediate administrative and financial relief to begin rebuilding.
