Guwahati: Assam’s flood crisis has killed 68 people. The state death toll remains firm. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika confirmed the fatalities, including 30 in Sivasagar, 20 in Charaideo, nine in Jorhat, two in Golaghat, and seven in other districts. Eight people remain missing.
Floodwaters hit 25 districts, 77 revenue circles, and 2,157 villages. Over 11.44 lakh people faced displacement. More than 71,000 residents currently crowd into 215 relief camps. Another 1,690 centers provide aid. Officials evacuated 29,983 people from vulnerable zones.
Legislators across party lines pledged one month’s salary to support victims. Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Dass, Deputy Speaker Habbey Teron, and all Secretariat staff joined the effort. BJP, Congress, AIUDF, TMC, AGP, and BPF MLAs agreed to the donation. Only the Raijor Dal abstained. Party MLA Mehboob Muktar stayed silent during the session.
Opposition members pushed for a Rs 10,000 crore central package. They want the disaster declared a national emergency. AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal donated Rs 2 crore personally. "The flood has completely shattered the economies of several districts in Assam, particularly the rural economy," said Khumtai MLA Mrinal Saikia, demanding direct compensation for livestock and poultry losses.
BJP workers started a fundraising drive. They aim to raise Rs 12 crore to clothe two lakh women and two lakh children. Agriculture Minister Pijush Hazarika promised free paddy seeds and seedlings to farmers in Jorhat, Sivasagar, and Charaideo within five days. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal maintains that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is monitoring the situation.
Water levels show signs of receding. Major rivers in Sivasagar are dropping. Sivasagar reported 22.89 mm of rain in the last 24 hours. The state government now claims the total number of affected people has dropped to 4.45 lakh. Power supply returns in phases after safety checks.
