Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday, July 25, to assess the state's escalating flood crisis. The two leaders reviewed ongoing rescue efforts and the administration's struggle to reach isolated communities. Modi offered his condolences for the lives lost and property destroyed. He pledged that the Union Government would prioritize the disaster, promising full support for immediate relief and long-term rebuilding.

AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal visited the hardest-hit zones Saturday and demanded the Centre label the floods a national calamity. He urged the government to sanction a 10,000 crore relief package. Ajmal alleged that state aid is failing to reach the people who need it most. He called for an independent inquiry into how officials distribute supplies and money. Ajmal claims he has already spent 2.5 crore of his own funds on relief work.
Thousands of families face hunger and displacement. Safe water is scarce. Ajmal pledged to distribute one lakh bottles of water and provide 10,000 toilets for women to address sanitation failures in relief camps. He noted the heavy toll on children, whose school supplies were washed away. He also plans to fund repairs for damaged Namghars and support media workers impacted by the disaster.
The AIUDF leader praised local volunteers during his tour. "He thanked members of both the Hindu and Muslim communities for opening their homes and providing food and shelter to stranded families, describing their response as an example of humanity prevailing in times of crisis."
Ajmal highlighted the plight of a former national athlete now left destitute by the rising waters. He provided the individual 1 lakh in emergency cash and promised 10,000 in monthly support. He intends to lobby the President and the Prime Minister to ensure the athlete receives official recognition.
