Guwahati: The Assam BJP unit celebrated a dual win on Sunday, July 19, honoring local achievements in film and sports. Party spokesperson Brojen Mahanta touted the selection of Olympian Lovlina Borgohain as India's flag bearer for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, England.
Mahanta expects the Tokyo Olympic medallist to continue her winning streak. He also offered well wishes to lawn bowl players Nayanmoni Saikia and Putul Sonowal, who are heading to the Games as part of the Indian contingent. The Indian Olympic Association and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports selected the delegation.
Assamese cinema took center stage as well. Jadumoni Dutta earned the Rajat Kamal Award for Best Assamese Feature Film for his work on Juiphool at the 72nd National Film Awards. Mahanta stated, "The recognition signifies the resurgence of Assamese cinema, which has completed more than a century of its glorious journey." The film Article 370 also secured the title of Best Feature Film.
Government coffers are opening for the arts. The Assam Budget 2026-27, presented on July 10, sets aside money to produce movies about the lives of Veer Lachit Borphukan and freedom fighter Kushal Konwar. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has already met with filmmaker Aditya Dhar to discuss the project centered on Borphukan.
