Assam BJP Celebrates National Film Award and Announces New Biopics

Guwahati: The Assam BJP celebrated a major win on Sunday, July 19. The feature film Juiphool secured the Rajat Kamal Award for Best Assamese Feature Film at the 72nd National Film Awards. Jadumoni Dutta wrote, directed, and produced the project. BJP spokesperson Brojen Mahanta touted the victory as a sign of the industry growth as it marks its second century of production.

State leaders plan to push more historical cinema. The Assam Budget 2026-27 sets aside funding for feature films about freedom fighter Kushal Konwar and Veer Lachit Borphukan. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma already met with filmmaker Aditya Dhar to talk about the Borphukan biopic. Mahanta stated, "the recognition reflected the growing stature of Assamese cinema."

The party also pivoted to sports. Officials named boxer Lovlina Borgohain as the Indian flag bearer for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The Indian Olympic Association and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports selected the Tokyo Olympic medallist for the high-profile honor. Mahanta offered his support to the full contingent, specifically mentioning Assam lawn bowl athletes Nayanmoni Saikia and Putul Sonowal.
