Guwahati: Assam police found Jibananda Basumatary dead in the Chatianguri area of Chirang district on July 30. Basumatary served as the vice-president of the United People's Party Liberal unit in Bijni. He is also known as Raju Basumatary. Investigators suspect foul play.
The trouble started on July 29. Basumatary got into a heated argument with two youths at the Chifung Hotel in Bijni. He vanished shortly after that confrontation. Family members first heard he died in an accident. They quickly doubted that story.
Bijni police recovered the body and ordered a post-mortem exam. Chirang Senior Superintendent of Police Mohanlal Meena and Additional Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar Mahato inspected the scene. A forensic team is currently gathering evidence at the site. Police are working to link the hotel altercation to the death.
UPPL leader Hom Sharma reacted to the news on Thursday morning. He demanded answers. "UPPL leader Hom Sharma expressed shock over Basumatary's death and demanded a thorough investigation into the case."
