Agartala: Opposition leader Jitendra Chaudhury ripped into the BJP-led coalition on August 23. He blamed the government for fostering an “undemocratic environment” in Tripura. The remarks came during a street-corner rally in Agartala. Left-affiliated workers organized the event to push for better pay. Employees want their pending allowances and a 19 per cent Dearness Allowance hike. They also demand an Eighth Pay Commission that mirrors central government standards.
Chaudhury targeted the alliance between the BJP, Tipra Motha, and IPFT. He claimed they ignored core promises from the 2018 Assembly election. The government supposedly pledged four to five lakh new jobs. Youth unemployment remains high. People in rural and hilly regions continue to struggle with their finances. Recent electricity tariff spikes further inflamed tensions. The state eventually offered a 100 per cent subsidy only after public backlash mounted.
The legislator dismissed these late concessions as insufficient. He insisted such moves cannot silence the protests of workers. All eyes now turn to the upcoming Assembly session. It starts on August 27. Employment and worker benefits will dominate the floor debate.
