Agartala: Tripura CPIM state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury slammed the state government on July 15. He claims authorities are sheltering criminals. The accusation followed a disrupted martyrdom day programme for CPIM leader Badal Shill in Chotta Khola, South District. BJP workers allegedly swarmed the site to halt the event.

Police intervened as tensions boiled over. Additional Superintendent of Police Suman Majumder led a team that blocked CPIM leaders from reaching the venue. Chaudhury, the current Leader of the Opposition, insisted his party held valid permits for the gathering. He reached out to the Director General of Police the previous day to flag security concerns. The DGP promised to alert the South Tripura Superintendent of Police, yet trouble erupted anyway.

Chaudhury expressed his frustration regarding the security failures. "We had taken permission at least four days back and came here, but the failure of the Tripura Police was not expected," Chaudhury said. Despite promises of adequate force, he noted that BJP supporters occupied the area since the early morning. He slammed the police for shielding the disruptors instead of protecting the event.

The opposition leader declared that the state government is living with goondas under the same roof. He claimed that "democracy has already been throttled, with a reign of goondas prevailing in Tripura." Chaudhury vowed to keep holding the annual event at Chotta Khola. He pledged to fight back and restore democratic norms to the state.
