Agartala: Tension gripped the Chottakhola area in Belonia on Wednesday. Police blocked a CPIM rally organized to honor Badal Chandra Shil. Shil, a 49-year-old party leader, died in 2024 after locals beat him. The party blames the ruling BJP for the attack.

Police stopped the march mid-route to avoid violence. A massive group of villagers occupied the road to block the procession. Most protesters were women. A police official noted, "The situation has turned highly volatile after locals of the village occupied the main road through which the CPIM rally was supposed to pass."

Villagers claim seven residents were falsely accused of Shil's murder. The High Court recently revoked the bail of these suspects, sending them back to jail. The locals blame the CPIM for these arrests. Tensions spiked when CPIM state secretary Jitendra Choudhury arrived. He clashed with officers and called the local Superintendent of Police an idiot. Additional SP Suman Majumder demanded the politician show respect. Former MLA Sudhan Das also joined the heated argument.

Choudhury addressed his supporters after the standoff. He declared, "It doesn't end here. We will keep coming here again and again." He claimed the state system is controlled by goons. Despite granting initial permission, police stood their ground. They prevented the rally from reaching the protest site to keep the peace.
