Agartala: Former Tripura Chief Minister and CPI(M) leader Manik Sarkar faces three separate police complaints. Authorities in the Mohanpur subdivision of West Tripura district received the filings across two stations. Jayanta Debnath and Indrajit Datta lodged reports at Sidhai Police Station, while Rajishing Debbarma filed his complaint at Lefunga Police Station.
The controversy stems from an August 10 political event in Agartala. Sarkar addressed the crowd regarding a campaign against the state and central governments. Local media outlets covered his comments on August 11. Complainants argue his words threaten to incite unrest and disrupt public order.
The filings highlight a specific statement regarding the potential for future unrest if an 11-point list of demands remains ignored. The complaints cite Sarkar as stating, "The country and state will go on the path of militant movement." They fear this rhetoric encourages aggressive agitation that anti-social elements might exploit to obstruct public servants or commit violence.
The complainants want police to register a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. They specifically requested charges under sections 147, 148, 152, and 353(1), along with counts for abetment and criminal conspiracy. Officials are urged to prioritize the investigation to prevent further disturbances to peace and security.

Sarkar broke his silence on Friday, August 14, labeling the police filings a desperate attempt by the ruling BJP and the state government to bully the opposition. He dismissed the legal pressure as proof of the government's own weakness and vowed that such intimidation tactics would not suppress his party or halt their political momentum.
The veteran leader accused authorities of twisting his words for political gain. He insisted that people are already organizing house to house to challenge the status quo across Tripura and the rest of the country, noting that he remains unfazed by the administrative crackdown.

Speaking on the sidelines of a Partition Horrors Remembrance Day event, current Chief Minister Manik Saha fired back at the opposition. He dismissed the CPI(M) as a party restless for power and slammed Sarkar for his recent rally remarks, characterizing the former leader's rhetoric as an attempt to leverage public grievances for political gain.
Saha also shifted the historical framing regarding the state's demographics. He declared that individuals who migrated to Tripura from erstwhile East Pakistan following the 1947 Partition should be classified as displaced people rather than refugees. He noted that areas like Comilla, Chakla Roshanabad, and the Chittagong Hill Tracts were historically tied to the Kingdom of Tripura before the border changes. Saha also used the event to contrast current BJP-led nationalistic initiatives, such as the week-long Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, with previous Independence Day observances.

During Independence Day ceremonies on Saturday, Saha highlighted a decade of state and national progress. He cited expanding road and aviation networks, better internet services, and advancements in airspace management as clear signs of growth. The Chief Minister also pointed to improved defense capabilities, noting successful surgical strikes and air strikes as proof of India's rising global influence. He claimed that under current leadership, Tripura now ranks second among northeastern states in both GDP and per capita income.
Expanding on his earlier remarks regarding the 1947 partition, Saha claimed the division of India was pushed forward against the wishes of the people. He argued that Pakistan and Bangladesh were integral parts of undivided India before the borders were redrawn, forcing millions into exile.

Beyond the political jabs, Saha pointed to specific economic markers on Independence Day. He claimed the state’s Gross State Domestic Product doubled in six years and its per capita income now nears the national average. He also touted the Destination Tripura Business Summit, claiming it netted investment proposals worth Rs 1.32 lakh crore, with representatives from 10 foreign embassies in attendance.
Saha cited 360 national and regional awards in fields like agriculture and rural development as proof of the state's progress. He specifically noted a new agreement with AIIMS, New Delhi, to upgrade GBP Hospital in Agartala and the successful rehabilitation of 6,935 Bru families repatriated from Mizoram.
Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma marked the 80th Independence Day with a ceremony at the Bishramganj School grounds. He focused on the legacy of freedom fighters, using the occasion to press for state unity and self-reliance while distributing sweets to security personnel on duty.
The Chief Minister also set a long-term goal for a developed state by 2047, branding the initiative as Viksit Tripura. He noted that India’s GDP now exceeds $4 trillion, positioning the country as the world's fourth-largest economy.
