Agartala: Tension boiled over in the Dataram area of the Matarbari Assembly constituency Tuesday evening. A Tipra Motha protest rally at Dataram Bazar turned into a standoff. BJP and Tipra Motha supporters squared off against each other in the street.

Witnesses said the trouble began when BJP supporters allegedly shouted abuse at the rally participants. BJP leaders tell a different story. They claim Tipra Motha members marched directly to the BJP office and shouted objectionable slogans. The groups collided. It got ugly fast.

Officers from the Garji outpost rushed to the scene. Police intervened to break up the shouting match. They worked for a long time to clear the area of both factions. Police kept personnel on the ground to prevent further violence. "The situation reportedly turned tense after some BJP supporters allegedly used abusive language against participants of the rally," local sources noted.

The area remains on edge. Cops are keeping a close watch on Dataram to stop another flare-up.
