Agartala: Heavy rain hammered Tripura on Sunday, wrecking 115 homes and pushing 974 people into 11 relief camps. The State Emergency Operation Centre confirmed that 113 houses suffered partial damage, while two others sustained severe destruction. No deaths or injuries occurred. Power grids and schools escaped damage.
Floodwaters struck Jirania, Sadar, Teliamura, and Khowai. In Jirania, two camps now house 34 people from 25 families. Sadar reports five camps holding 330 people from 87 families. Khowai suffered the worst structural losses with 92 damaged houses and 559 people seeking shelter in three camps. Mohanpur tallied 22 damaged houses from storms on August 22, while Teliamura noted one severely damaged home from the August 23 rains. Officials said, "Financial assistance for the affected households was being processed."
Rivers are rising. The Howrah river hit 11.06 metres at Agartala, matching the critical threshold at 2.30 pm. The Khowai river reached 23.85 metres, just shy of the 24-metre flood mark. Lembuchhera soaked up 218 mm of rain. Budhjongnagar and Agartala Airport saw 177 mm and 153 mm, respectively.
Forecasters expect more rain. Thunderstorms and moderate showers will likely hit the region for the next 24 hours. Officials issued warnings for isolated heavy rain in North Tripura, Unakoti, Dhalai, Khowai, West Tripura, and Gomati districts.
