Agartala: Tripura officials are working to add the Chakma language to Google Translate. Workers are currently compiling a database of 50,000 words to fuel the project. This announcement came Friday during the first state-level Chakma Language and Script Day held at Agartala’s Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan.

Industries and Commerce Minister Santana Chakma led the event. A vibrant rally marched from Astabal ground to Rabindra Bhavan to kick off the festivities. Participants wore traditional attire and performed cultural acts while chanting slogans about linguistic pride. Santana Chakma noted the weight of the moment. She stated, "script is the torchbearer of culture, and language is the foundation of identity."

Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury also attended the celebration. He noted that Tripura supports 19 indigenous communities. The government currently teaches Chakma in 123 government schools for students in Classes I through VIII. More than 4,000 students learn the language from 172 teachers. The State Council of Educational Research and Training distributes free textbooks. Officials now plan to extend this instruction into secondary and higher secondary levels.

Minister Chakma proposed introducing the Chakma script in Anganwadi centers to boost early learning. She pushed for the language to grow alongside Bengali and Kokborok. The state government remains committed to protecting minority traditions through education and technology. The event emphasized that preserving a mother tongue helps secure heritage for future generations.
