Student Group Seizes Foreign Liquor Shipment at Imphal Airport

Imphal: Members of the Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) intercepted 60 bags of foreign liquor at Imphal International Airport on Wednesday. The group acted on specific intelligence regarding a large shipment arriving from Delhi on an IndiGo flight. They rounded up 10 individuals involved in transporting the goods.

DESAM Secretary for Anti-Drug Abuse, Ningthoukhongjam Nobinchandra, led the operation. He told reporters the group moved in after getting a tip. "After receiving reliable information, our members carried out a verification at the airport and recovered around 60 bags filled with foreign liquor. It is unfortunate that such consignments continue to find their way into the state. Our society is already facing serious challenges due to the growing menace of drugs and other intoxicants. Such illegal activities must be stopped immediately," he said.

The suspects claimed the booze was for personal use. Nobinchandra flatly rejected that excuse. He argued the massive volume points to a commercial operation rather than private consumption. He also suggested other carriers might have stayed inside the terminal to avoid his team.

The student group handed the 10 people and the cargo over to police. Officers have opened an investigation to track the source of the shipment. They will also look into potential violations of the state's prohibition laws.
