Shillong: Shillong Lajong vaulted to the top of the Shillong Premier League standings on October 1. They beat defending champions Langsning 2-0 at the SSA Stadium. A packed crowd watched the high-intensity contest. The win leaves Lajong with 17 points from eight matches. Langsning holds 16 points from the same number of games.
Iohborlang L Lyngkhoi broke the deadlock in the 45th minute. His free-kick clipped the upright before finding the net. Freddy Jyrwa doubled the lead in the 80th minute. The game moved at a frantic pace. Tensions spilled over on the pitch as players battled for control. Errors at the back provided scoring chances for both sides. Lajong striker Freddy Jyrwa remained a constant threat throughout the match. He raced onto a long ball and beat goalkeeper Rajat Paul Lyngdoh, but teammate Wilbert Marbaniang missed the open chance.
Langsning struggled to convert their own opportunities. Samuel Phawa, Mebanshngain Kurkalang, and Syed Ahmed all missed the target. Goalkeeper Lakpa Lama kept the clean sheet, denying Donlad Diengdoh late in the match. Langsning coach and staff have reason to worry as the title defense falters. The defending champions can no longer rely solely on their own results. They still have a game in hand against fourth-placed Nongkseh, who hold 13 points from seven matches. Mawlai remains in the hunt with 15 points from seven games.
Mawlai faces Sawmer this Friday at 3pm. They look to close the gap at the top. The league remains tightly contested. Reflecting on the state of the race, one observer noted: "Langsning can no longer rely solely on their own result to retain the title."
