Guwahati: A dispute over a signed agreement has fractured a village in Assam. Families in Bargaon, located in the Samaguri area of Nagaon, drew up a contract involving two minors who were dating. They wanted to marry once they hit the legal age. Locals held a public meeting to formalize the pact between the two households.
The agreement included a stiff financial clause. If the girl wed someone else, her family owed the boy’s kin Rs 2 lakh. The same penalty applied to the boy’s side if he married another person. Tensions boiled over when reports surfaced that the girl had been married off in Kachua. The boy’s family claims he is now inconsolable. The boy’s father filed an FIR with the Nagaon Superintendent of Police and the local station. He claims his daughter-in-law-to-be was married off before she turned 17. The father described his son's state, noting he is "inconsolable since learning about it."
This complaint lands as the state government pushes a heavy crackdown on child marriage. Police are still working to verify the claims. Details regarding the exact timeline of the marriage and the legal weight of the agreement remain under investigation.
